Encourage Children to Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Getting your child off to a good start in life is one of the top priorities shared by all parents. This includes helping them maintain good oral hygiene throughout childhood and into their adult life. Encouraging good oral hygiene in their early years improves the chances of your son or daughter maintaining good oral health as an adult.

The American Dental Association notes that you can start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they emerge from the gums. As they age, you can let them play at the act of brushing. There are child size toothbrushes and child safe toothpaste, sold in stores to help keep them encouraged. Just be sure to look for the approved by the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance on the package. This ensures that you’re providing them with the highest products possible.

Once they’re done playing at brushing, you can provide a little follow up brushing to make sure all areas of their teeth have been cleaned.

You should also floss their teeth at least once each day. If you’re struggling to fit your adult hands in their small mouth, you might want to spool the dental floss around your pinky fingers or using a small floss stick. Waxed dental floss makes flossing easier, as the waxy coating allows the strand to slip between teeth. As their manual dexterity improves you can let them use the floss stick with their own hands.

Their regular dental checkup at Dr. Mecca’s clinic is also important to maintaining a healthy mouth. This is a good opportunity to get them excited about going to the dentist so try to make it an upbeat experience for them.
