Teen Oral Care

If you want your teen to have a top-notch oral health and smile, then there are things you need to do. Teen oral care is a two-person job, and your teen needs your help. To help you help your child, our dentist, Dr. Mecca, and dental team have some helpful tips and information for you.

First, encourage your teen to take good care of their teeth. Give them instructions on how to do so. Tell them they should brush their teeth twice a day, floss their teeth once a day, rinse their mouth daily, and visit their dentist every six months. This can help them avoid tooth stains, bad breath, cavities, missing teeth, and other dental problems. To help them keep up on oral hygiene, make sure to keep soft-bristled toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste, and easy-to-use floss around the house.

Second, set a good example for your teen by taking care of your smile as well. If your teen sees you keep up on oral hygiene, they might feel more motivated to do the same. They might also understand that oral hygiene is important for everyone at every age—not just teens.

Third, don’t have junk food lying around the house. This is important because junk food can promote cavities and enamel erosion. Instead of junk food, have fruits, vegetables, and dairy products lying around for your teen to snack on. These products are much healthier for their teeth and gums.
